Report on PCE Club's 35th Event - "Growing Up with Music" on July 8, 2006
Dear Clubbers and Friends,
The PCE Club's 35th event was a great success, held on July 8, 2006 at the Asian Cultural Center in Edison. The theme of the event was "Growing Up with Music". Over forty adults and more than twenty children attended the event. The club was very fortunate to have Mr. andMrs. Meng with us sharing their precious and hard earned experience and lessons with other parents after their son, young pianist Yuqing (Damon) Meng gave a splendid piano performance.
As usual, our event began with the children's talent show. The children took the advantage of this small stage so as to lead to a larger one in the future. Over 10 pre-registered children performed, mostly piano pieces. A lovely little girl did wonderful dancing though. A few other boys performed singing. That was a lovely show.
The main session "Growing Up with Music" was unveiled with a flawless and fabulous performance by Yuqing Meng. He played 3 piano pieces including a Chopin's etude, and "Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2", which is particulary well known to the Chinese American children due to Lang Lang's playing it in his master classes. After that at the high demand of the audience, he played another Chopin's etude. Young as he is, he played so well just like a veteren professional. He won greatad miration as well as appreciation from the audience. Followed this very pleasant and enjoyable performance was the parenting sharing forum with Mr. and Mrs. Meng. Like many other parents, they work very hard andmake every effort to raise their only child healthy, happy, musically outstanding and academically competitive. When asked if Yuqing's piano playing affects his academic performance, Mr. Meng replied that the two were actually positively affecting each other: mind and hands work closely together - one can't do well without the other. Another important thing pointed out by Mr. Meng is that we should encourage children to develop good time management skills as early as possible. Parents should also practise positive reinforment instead of negative punishment in child rearing. The session was so well received that many parents were reluctant to leave when it was late and the time to close the center. The parents in presence were very grateful to the Meng family for their generosity and kindness to share their thoughts and experience. Thank you so much, Yuqing, Hong and Henry, for your great support to thePCE Club. While the adults and older children were enjoying themusic and discussion forum, our little ones under the guidance of Ms. Sohpia Zhou had a great time singing, performing upstairs. Sophie not only helped organize the children's program, she also brought many goodie bags for every child who attended the event. Thank you very much, Sophie, for your great help and love for the children.
Here I also want to say "thank you" to Mr. Xinhui Tang (who came all the way down from Jersey City) for his help at the reception desk. Although he himself is not a parent yet, he was the one who took the most notes at the session. I salute you for your efforts, Xinhui. Thank you also for helping to write the detailed report in Chinese. Our officers are always being so supportive. Thank you Dennis for all the hard work to get the venue ready at the beginning and clean-up at the end. Thank you to Cindy, James and Cathay who are always there whenever needed. There are so many others who helped but I could not recall the names including a gentleman who helped take the pictures. Thank you all for making this successful event possible. The club will be organizing a camping trip for the August event. James and his team are working on it. He will post more detailed info later. Please stay tuned.
